So, where have I been?

It has been a long time since my last my post, and while it was quite the hiatus, it was not my intention to be away for over two months. Yes, over two months. I have missed our blogging community as I haven’t been able to catch up on any of the blog posts that I read either! Very frustrating and disappointing. You would not believe the amount of blog posts I have sitting in my inbox that are waiting for me to read and comment on. I will explain where I have been and why I haven’t posted anything on my blog.

That sacred Closet when you sweep —
Entitled “Memory” —
Select a reverential Broom —
And do it silently.

‘Twill be a Labor of surprise —
Besides Identity
Of other Interlocutors
A probability —

August the Dust of that Domain —
Unchallenged — let it lie —
You cannot supersede itself
But it can silence you — (Emily Dickinson)

Every year, on the 27th of January the world observes the Holocaust Memorial Day. On that day we are called to remember how far can the folly and cruelty of man can go. We must remember; and teach our children that the privilege of being born in such a long time of peace and wealth, at least in this part of the hemisphere, is not for granted, it may not last forever as those dangers are always behind the corner. Peace must be defended by any attack ignorance and arrogance may…

Sky battle of Kurukshetra

It has been my contention for a very long time, that if we were to somehow remove the Indian influence on astrology, we would have precious little left at the end of the day. Moreover, this source of wisdom goes back to the sages who composed the first of the Veda, know as the RgVeda. This would take us back perhaps 6,000 years and we can safely estimate that the oral wisdom predated even that by a considerable period of time. It is thought that Zarathustra was a Vedic priest, which would speak to the far reach of the Vedic cultures which extended also well into what is now Afghanistan.

The purpose of this article is to stimulate further research and increased dialogue with practitioners of ancient Indian astrology. However, it is merely an incomplete introduction and if it raises more questions than it answers, I…

B_, the Ambiguous Ninth Avatar of Vishnu

Excellent read. ❤

As we’ve seen earlier, there are two competing theories as to why mythic motifs keep recurring through the world; one is that they are archetypal, and therefore come unbidden from the depths of the collective unconscious, and the other is that they are a kind of cultural cross contamination (in the best sense), also known as dispersion theory.

Now, as with most things, there is a middle path; maybe motifs disperse because they are archetypal.

The problem with that theory is that it makes too much sense, and leaves little room for people to get defensive about their respective positions.

I’d say “don’t shoot the messenger”, but we know that’s who always gets shot first.

To quote Sophocles in his play Antigone, “no one loves the messenger who brings bad news”.

That asides, we find ourselves in an interesting predicament when it comes to talking about the ninth, penultimate…

Kalki, the Tenth Avatar of Vishnu, Hindu Cycles of Time, and the End of World as We Know It…

They were surely Aliens 😉

MythCrafts Team's avatarMyth Crafts

Hindu calculations of time are tricky business; they reckon units of time that are measured against a day of Brahma, the creator God.

How long does a day of Brahma take? 4.32 billion years. This is called a Kalpa.

Of course, where there is day, there is night; so a full cycle, two Kalpas, takes 8.64 billion solar years.

By way of comparison, the current estimated age of the Earth is a mere 4.543 billion years, basically a little over one Kalpa.

The current estimated age of the known universe is 13.772 billion years, give or take 59 million years. In other words, it’s a little over three Kalpas.

How old does any given Brahma get to be?

100 hundred years old. That’s a staggering 313,528,320,000,000 solar years. At that point, according to Hindu cosmology, Brahma dies, and a new Brahma is born, starting the cycle all over again.

That’s…
