Cologne

Niall O'Donnell's avatarEnglish-Language Thoughts

I’ll be driving to Cologne in the morning, so I may not get much writing done over the weekend.

Cologne of course, is a city in western Germany.

Cologne though, as in cologne with a lower-case C when it’s not at the start of a sentence, is something a man sprays on himself to smell nice.

The reason we use the name for both is pretty straightforward.

Head and Tail of the Dragon : The Lunar Nodes

P. James Clark's avatarThe Classical Astrologer

luna_n5g

From the point of view of own planet, the Sun and the Moon appear to be about the same size. This is because the Sun is four hundred times larger than the Moon, but also about four hundred times the distance from Earth. From earliest times this has exerted a strong psychological relationship to the two luminaries, encouraging the belief that they are of equal but different importance. The Sun may be the source of all energies, but it is the Moon that determines the tides and has the most immediate effect on our moods and earthly activities. The Moon in astrological practise is therefore of great significance. In fact in most systems, she is given much more importance than the current frenzy for Sun sign astrology would imply! The Moon’s Nodes are not planets. They are points in space indicating the intersection of two orbits.

The elements to be considered are a) the Ecliptic…

Crazy Wisdom – the Archetype of the Fool, the Clown, the Jester and the Trickster.

fallenAngel's avatarstOttilien

When I lived in California I listened often to the KFOG radio commentator Wes (“Scoop”) Nisker who happened to be also a comedian:  “If you don’t like the news … go out and make some of your own”, was his frequent catchphrase.  Comedians are often called jester, fool, trickster and clown. Very recently many European ( foolish) fools call an Italian comedian a clown. Because he did not like the news, and made them himself. All of above those terms are nearly universally recognized patterns of characters – Jungian Archetypes.  Every of this upcoming four archetypes challenge conventional wisdom differently, offering different Crazy Wisdom.

C.G. Jung stressed the point that archetypes are not inherited only collective patterns of potential representation. When they are touched by the light of the conscious mind they may become in the lower plane instincts and the higher realm images. That, while it is the core of the matter, can said simpler.  First instincts transport in an instant information…

Queen, Mother, Wise Woman and Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Feminine

Standard

fallenAngel's avatarstOttilien

This article complements the concepts explored in my article “Archetypes of the Mature Masculine” and applies them to the other half of humanity—women. In doing so I apply the same principles, not in a mechanistic way, but in the spirit of Jung’s archetypes and their rationale. Let’s start with a few words of C. G. Jung himself, when he talks about the Anima.

Feamaland Male Shadow Triangle Male Shadow Triangle Source: King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette

Thomas Moore and Douglas Gillette adopted and extended Jung’s approach in their exploration of the masculine psyche by using the collective archetypes of the King, the Warrior, the Magician, and the Lover. Obviously those four male archetypes can be translated and mapped in female clusters of virtues, specific attributes associated with four major female archetypes: the Queen, the Mother, the Wise Woman and the (female) Lover found in history and  myths. This has been…

The sparrow asked: “What will you do to me?”

The hunter said: “I will kill you and eat you.”

The sparrow replied: “I am very small and would be just a little bite for you. If you let me go I will teach you three lessons which could be useful to you for a life time.”

The hunter thought that wasn’t a bad idea and responded: “Alright, tell me the first lesson now in my hand, the second lesson when you are flying and the third one when you sit on that tree.”

The sparrow agreed and said: “Never regret your loss.”

The hunter opened his hand and the sparrow continued: “Never believe the impossible.”

“Welcome back Professor.” Diego’s warm genuine smile indicated his pleasure at seeing his old friend again. David Brogansis – emeritus professor of biology at Stamford University hugged his old friend.

At seventy years of age, he knew that this field trip to the pacific coastal jungle of Colombia would in all probability be his last. David had devoted his entire academic career to the study of poisonous frogs like Phyllobates terribilis, the Golden Dart frog, and in particular the alkaloid batrachotoxins they exude from their skin for protection from predators. In the restricted world of academia, David was the acknowledged expert in his field. His friend and long time field researcher Diego Silva shared his passion for the tiny highly colourful amphibians.

Within an hour Diego had steered his Jeep Cherokee through the crowded streets of Bogotá and finally west to the pristine jungle both men loved. By nightfall…
